CHAPTER 12

SAWYER

Nope.

Crosscircuit can claim he’s making sure Bullshark isn’t gonna hurt me too badly because of the escape, but I don’t trust him one bit. That monster is enraged, and I don’t see how he can possibly be thinking straight enough to kick my butt without killing me. From what I know about him, showing restraint isn’t exactly his thing.

“Danger at your 4 o’clock,” says a voice in my ear.

It helps that the drone warns me when he approaches and feeds me all kinds of information that might help me defeat him. But… and it’s a big but. Unfortunately, the voice in my ear belongs to Crosscircuit. I never thought I’d prefer Amber or Tiffany, my former helmet hoes. What? They aren’t real people.

Also unfortunate for me, I have to do the actual fighting part myself. While drunk, even. He couldn’t have outfitted this thing with missiles or something?

I get the warning from the drone just in time to duck and roll away from Bullshark’s first attack. Won’t kill me? Bull crap! He’s using his weight bar like a golf club.

I jump to my feet and back up as quickly as possible. But then he comes at me like an actual bull.

“A leftward dodge at a negative twenty-seven-degree angle will spare you damage akin to being struck by a bullet at 56% velocity.”

None of that data sounds promising, let me tell you.

Luckily, I’m already in movement during that whole speech since by the time it’s over, so is the attack. Makes sense since its creator rambles on and on and loves the sound of his voice.

Then Justice gets between us, jumping a few feet in front of me, but Bullshark mows him down like a fullback rolling over a punter while heading for the end zone.

For someone who doesn’t care about sports, I’d consider that a pretty decent analogy.

“I got this, man,” I said. Much as I appreciate the assist, I don’t have time to worry about Justice at the moment. I can’t help him if I’m dead, and we don’t exactly have a working relationship to begin with.

Oh, great. He’s down and not moving.

Another warning from the drone gives me a head start. I leap at the last second and plant my palms on Bullshark’s head to vault over him. It isn’t as easy as it was in the cafeteria since I don’t have the luxury of being tabletop-height. From the ground, it’s a challenge. He’s gotta be a least a foot and a half taller than me, but the fact that he’s hunched in an attempt to tear my throat out with his teeth is a boon in my favor. Yep. I heard it, too—thankful he’s trying to murder me. Amazing the things that seem normal after doing this job as long as I have.

I manage to get past him and even give his head a shove on the way. This sends him slamming even harder into the bulkhead than he would’ve without my help. The sound when his skull rams metal reminds me of a slab of meat hitting the grill at my old job at Big Frankie Jr.
